10 tips for renting a car in Spain

Renting a car in Spain is a great way of getting around and seeing more of the country. If you have your own property then it helps you catch up on those jobs you routinely have to do as well as making the most of your stay when you’re out here. However, there are some potential pitfalls. We look at what they are and how to avoid them.

When it comes to hiring a car, there are plenty of options but which one is right for you? Many people have a trusted company that they return to but if you haven’t or you’re just a little dissatisfied with your experience so far, then you might follow our advice.

1.    Beware price comparison sites

That isn’t to say, don’t use them. They can provide a useful guide to what’s available at what cost and what you might expect. However, they can also mask the real cost of hiring from them and some, only feature a limited number of companies. Instead of relying on the site, also visit the company’s website and check for those hidden extras that might not be obvious on the site itself.

2.    Demand an exact quote

You want to know exactly what it will cost you and companies that are not keen to provide a clear quote probably do it for a reason. Insist on knowing exactly how much you will pay, to avoid additional extras at the airport when you collect your vehicle. There can be hidden charges such as those for child seats, for younger, or even older drivers.

3.    What are the arrangements for petrol?

This is one area where car hire companies can vary the most. Some charge for a full tank on collection at an inflated price and even include a charge for filling the tank up. It is rare that you will use all the fuel so prepaying for a full tank can be a disadvantage for you.

4.    Be sure about insurance

Some companies will take money off your credit card to cover the excess in case of an accident and this excess can be steep. If you don’t have an accident, it is returned to you but it can take some time and, of course, you will be paying interest in the meantime. Check what is included as there can be extras added that you’re not aware of.

5.    Hard sell on insurance

Some companies can put pressure on you to take out more expensive ‘full coverage’ or ‘zero excess’. Decide what is best for you and be firm. Ultimately, they won’t want to lose your business.

6.    Administrative charges

Watch out for additional administrative charges. These should not be added on as extras but should be part of the quote you have been given. Check whether there is a charge for additional drivers as some companies include this for free. If you do incur a parking or traffic fine, be aware that many companies will also charge you an administration fee.

7.    Can you cross the border?

Some companies will charge you more for taking your hire car across the border, for example into Portugal, France, Andorra or even Gibraltar. Be clear if you are planning to do this, what the arrangements are.

8.    Take a video

Take a good look at your car when you collect it. You might be in a hurry to start your holiday but it is worthwhile noting any damage. Take a date-linked video of any scratches or dents that there are on the car when you collect it. This will help protect you if they try to blame them on you when the car is returned.

9.    Be wary of upgrades

Upgrades sound exciting but make sure that even if you are not paying more for the cost of the rental, other charges aren’t increased. Some companies might add on additional fuel and insurance charges for an upgraded model. If you feel this is worth it for a better motor, then fine.

10. Shop around and look local

You’ll know the big company names but there are also smaller, local companies that can sometimes offer a much better, and more personal deal. Why not ask neighbours and friends in the area for recommendations.
