Spain Explained

Do you need legal representation? Watch out for the fakes!

During the height of the pandemic and post Brexit it was to be expected that there would be a lull in the housing market. Now, moving forward, the market is recovering and we are seeing an increasing number of homes being sold and on the market. Unfortunately, with this increase in activity comes an increase in the opportunities for those out to make money in disreputable ways. Here, we’re talking about the false professionals.

The legal profession is one that is prone to intruders and imposters. There are, unfortunately, people out there who are happy to describe themselves as an ‘asesor legal’ or ‘legal advisor’ without ever having seen the inside of a law school. Be careful! Conveyancing involves the exchange of large quantities of money. It is important that your interests are safeguarded and that your investments aren’t at risk.

We are currently receiving a number of enquiries from our own clients about services they are being advertised in local papers and on local radio and publicity that’s being posted through their letterboxes. This information is, to put it bluntly, false and being given by people who are far from professional.

These imposters are making the most of the confusion there is surrounding Brexit and other changes we’re experiencing at the moment. They are offering services that are totally unnecessary such as the re-writing wills and other activities that can actually put your savings at risk.

If you do need a lawyer for some reason, then please choose carefully. If you wish to buy or sell a property, need Inheritance services, arrange or verify a will or power of attorney or donate property, then please make sure that your professional is who they say they are with the correct legal status.

Only a law firm with duly registered practising lawyers can offer legal advice and provide the reputable guidance you need when engaging in transactions such as buying and selling property. Only an independent law firm will safeguard your interests without being influenced by one or more other parties. You need a professional who is on your side, supported by knowledge and integrity.

By using Ábaco you can be sure that you have the attention of the best professionals who have the interests of their clients at heart. We are a group of advisors who are backed by a team of officially titled and registered lawyers and sworn translators with the support of experienced professionals and backoffice staff. Our aim is to ensure that our clients understand exactly what we are doing and the steps we are taking on their behalf.

Don’t be taken in by misleading advertising, rumours or fees that seem to be too good to be true. Don’t be taken for a ride that involves putting your money and your livelihood at risk. If nothing else, ask for a second opinion from a professional. At Ábaco we will be delighted to let you know what we think and we can guarantee that we know what we’re talking about.
